"Be the change you want to see in the world"
-- attributed to Mahatma Ghandi, but may not be
Here at Future Wise, we're pretty cut up about surveillance of people by their internet use. Mandatory data retention stinks and proposed laws to require device makers to allow access to our encrypted communications stink.
But as well as government surveillance, recent events with Facebook and Cambridge Analytica have reminded us we're all under heavy corporate surveillance, as we've also pointed out previously.
Our website has until now used Google Analytics, so we can keep an eye on how we're doing engaging people around issues (and because Trent is a data nerd and likes this stuff). But the data we get from this service also contributes to Google's profile of you.
So we've done what we think is the right thing, and turned off Google Analytics, replacing it with OpenWebAnalytics. It gives us pretty much the same information, but doesn't help out big G in their mission to know everything you do on the internet.
It's a small step, but we believe in what we do, and we'll try to show it through our actions, not just our words.
